I have had visions of colour when I hear music for as long as I can remember. It wasn't until later on in life that I found out about the name for this phenomena called ' Synesthesia '; the unusual sensory perception of two senses coming together.
I have 'Chromesthesia' the sound-to-colour form of Synesthesia, which means the characteristics and quality of a particular sound (timbre, tone, pitch) produces a colour in my mind that I can see. This has greatly influenced the way music works from me, as well as when it comes to composition.
I also have Grapheme Synesthesia, which is seeing the letters of the alphabet as colours.
My paintings are inspired by the marriage of these two senses. There is something about the melding of audio and visual that captivates me beyond anything else, and I find it hard trying to separate the two.
Since 2010, I have been exploring the way in which Synesthesia can influence a painting, or a piece of music, or both, and how the viewer's senses and emotions interact with it. I am forever seeking to find that unity.
